Comparative Insanity

In 2008 the Obama campaign in Houston was based out of a small building just at the south edge of downtown. When the election was over and the campaign moved out, the murals on the side of the building, a “Yes we Can” sign and a copy of the famous/infamous Shepherd Fairey poster, were left as public art.

Last February, person(s) unknown threw paint on the mural.

Tonight, a local artist, Reginald Adams of MOCAH, spent a few hours repairing the mural. It’s crazy enough that he went to START working on the thing at something like 9 or 10 pm; it’s crazier still that I went down there at 1 AM to shoot pictures of it.

And yet, there we were.

Cameraman

From the HISD Scholars’ Banquet the other night… a colleague sitting in a good patch of lighting required to be shot.

Good Guys Win… again

Once again Sam Houston’s Texian militia has defeated Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna’s Mexican regulars at San Jacinto.

More behind the flag….

Not Like This

Should you ever be called upon to dedicate a park or space for children…

Keep it short.

Now go shoot. Gorgeous weather for it.

New pix

And new gallery space.

This is your guide:

She’ll take you right where you need to be.

The blogs and the website are NOT going away… and I’m hoping to be updating even more often (no more months-off). However, now I’m ALSO leasing space and time from SmugMug. This makes it easier for me to post larger numbers of photographs from events AND, perhaps even more important, enables YOU to actually buy prints of Your Very Own to hang on your walls or carry around in your wallets or put on your desk or hang in the loo or recover your dartboards or…

And should you buy these, it makes it easier for ME to go out and shoot more OF them, which gives you a bigger choice of dart boards or wall decor or whatever. So it’s a win-win all around.

For future reference the basic website there is http://rcmckee.smugmug.com, but I’m going to also encourage you to wander smugmug and look at some of the other work there. (AFTER you order your prints, of course.)

Some of those websites belong to photographers I’ve been following maniacally for years. You’ll know `em when you see `em… but I’d REALLY appreciate it if you’d drop me a line when you find them, because if you’re wrong and I don’t know them, I probably want to.

Update

Yeesh! Been a month? Eeep.

Been just a little busy… setting up a new gallery site, working on portfolio, scrambling for income, the usual.

Also shooting a few pix, which I just didn’t think to post.

The best way to blind a Houstonian: Put a windshield in front of its face.

When sock monkeys go bad…..

Sometimes… you just shoot and wonder why later.

And there’ll be a link to a large gallery from the Rodeo Parade last weekend. This will probably be posted tomorrow sometime.

Icepocalypse 2011 – it’s over

So… no snow.

Not even a lot of ice.

But the thing about ice is that in the wrong place it’s veryvery bad. 400-odd crashes this morning, just in the Houston area, I heard.

And the stairs to my front door were more or less unusable until about 1500 this afternoon.

On the other paw, in the RIGHT place, you get…

this:

And if you play around a bit (dressed warm), this

And then you go downstairs and look back up and there’s this:

Eventually, of course, you decide to blow through a fortune in pixels to make up for not having the split-second timing you always wanted…

And that’s enough so you go back where it’s warm and not slippery and there’s hot coffee.

Stay safe; it’s a new day tomorrow.

Loving the new camera

Sam Houston Park, downtown Houston, about 3:00 pm…

Love these trees. Love even more that I can put the sun IN THE FRAME and I STILL cannot make the new Lumix 20/1.7 flare.

Utterly amazing.

Oil Sketch

I’m pretty good with a camera.

Sometimes I wish I could capture images in other ways…

Something like this:

This is Brandt Mannchen, one of Houston’s best (and best known) environmental protectors, as rendered by Lilibeth Andre’, one of Houston’s best portraitists and painters.

In about 20 minutes. On the fly. At an Art Show.

And the finished piece looked even better.

I’m envious.
