The Texian cavalry under General Sherman engaged the Mexicans the day before the battle (The Reenactment is compressed down to an hour or so...). The results were minimal. One Texan was mortally wounded, another wounded less seriously, and a several horses were killed. There were some minor injuries on the Mexican side. The engagement almost brought on a full-scale battle, which probably would have been bad for the Texians. Mirabeau B. Lamar, then a private, distinguished himself by conspicuous bravery rescuing comrades under fire, for which he received a salute from the Mexicans, and a brevet promotion to Colonel and command of the Texas cavalry from his own side.
