The train from Guayaquil, a major port city on the west coast, to Alausí, in the southern Highlands, is a lifeline for the small communities along its route. It serves as a self-propelled grocery store and shopping mall, as well as transportation, for the farms and workers along the tracks. We rode from Guayaquil up to Bucay, at the base of the mountains.
It was very definitely a trip.
